"Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration."

- Thomas Edison, American Inventor

Perseverance is about setting your goals, formulating a plan to reach those goals, and then taking the steps necessary to succeed. When things don’t go as planned, perseverant people use setbacks as learning experiences. They keep their goals in sight, and continue on their path with an updated plan for success.

In the media, we often see the outcome of a person’s perseverance without all of the steps that lead up to it. We see a football star celebrating his Super Bowl Victory, but not all the years of training, sacrifice, and sore muscles that it took to get there. We see an actress accepting her Academy Award to a standing ovation, but not the endless acting classes, auditions, and plays that perfected her skills in the years before.

Successful people, like the actress and the football star, work hard over a long period of time to reach their goals. They don’t give up when the going gets tough.

At school, some students give up too easily when they can’t find the answer to a problem. They crumple their papers and say, “I can’t do this, it’s too hard!” Or, they write down any answer just to get the task over with. Perseverant students try harder to find a solution by re-reading the problem, asking questions, and finding someone who can help. They stay focused on their goal of solving a problem correctly and don’t stop until the job is done.

Perseverant people know that success in all matters, big and small, requires focus, patience, and hard work. Perseverance is one of the most important ingredients for achieving success in life.
